Concept explainers
Introduction :
Decomposition is the process, by which the organic material is converted into the inorganic material. The organisms involved in the decomposition process are known as decomposers.

Answer to Problem 7STP
Correct answer :
Option (c) a
Explanation of Solution
Explanation/justification for the correct answer :
Option (c) a fungus that obtain food from dead logs. The fungi digest the food externally. They release chemicals that convert the surrounding food material into smaller compounds, which they use as nutrients. In this case, the digestive enzymes from the fungi would convert organic matter of the dead log to inorganic nutrient, hence, fungus is a decomposer.
Explanation for incorrect answer :
Option (a) bacteria that make food from inorganic compound. Here the bacteria is not using the organic material from the dead remaining of an organism. Hence, it is not a process of decomposition. Hence, it is an incorrect answer.
Option (b) a clam that takes water and filter food. This is the process of filter feeding, in this case, no conversion of the organic material takes place. Hence, it is an incorrect answer.
Option (d) plants that make food using sunlight. This process is called photosynthesis. In this process, inorganic material is converted into molecules used as food source. It is almost opposite of decomposition. Hence, it is an incorrect answer.

A researcher wants to study the effectiveness of a pill intended to reduce stomach heartburn in pregnant women. The researcher chooses randomly 400 women to participate in this experiment for 9 months of their pregnancy period. They all need to have the same diet. The researcher designs two groups of 200 participants: One group take the real medication intended to reduce heartburn, while the other group take placebo medication. In this study what are: Independent variable: Dependent variable: Control variable: Experimental group: " Control group: If the participants do not know who is consuming the real pills and who is consuming the sugar pills. This study is It happens that 40% of the participants do not find the treatment helpful and drop out after 6 months. The researcher throws out the data from subjects that drop out.
