Chapter 3, Problem 53AP
A celebrated Mark Twain story has motivated contestants in the Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee, where frog jumps as long as 2.2 m have been recorded. If a frog jumps 2.2 m and the launch angle is 45°, find (a) the frog’s launch speed and (b) the time the frog spends in the air. Ignore air resistance.

During the siege of Constantinople that led to its conquest by the Ottomans in 1453, the
Hungarian engineer Orban built a set of bombards (primitive cannon) to throw enormous stones
at the city to breach its walls. The largest of these could throw a 300 kg stone a distance x = 2
km. Assume that the stone was launched at an angle of 0 = 45 degrees above the horizontal; in
the absence of air resistance, this gives the largest range.
a) What speed did the stone have to be launched at to achieve this range?
b) How long was the ball in the air?
c) How fast was the ball traveling at the apex of its flight?
A rock is thrown off a cliff at an angle of 53° with respect to the horizontal. The cliff is 100 m high. The initial speed of the rock is 30 m/s. (a) How high above the edge of the cliff does the rock rise? (b) How far has it moved horizontally when it is at maximum altitude? (c) How long after the release does it hit the ground? (d) What is the range of the rock? (e) What are the horizontal and vertical positions of the rock relative to the edge of the cliff at t = 2.0 s, t = 4.0 s, and t = 6.0 s?
A trebuchet was a hurling machine built to attack the walls of a castle under siege. A large stone could be hurled against a wall to break apart the wall. The machine was not placed near the wall because then arrows could reach it from the castle wall. Instead, it was positioned so that the stone hit the wall during the second half of its flight. Suppose a stone is launched with a speed of v0=28.0 m/s and at an angle of u0 = 40.0°.What is the speed of the stone if it hits the wall (a) just as it reaches the top of its parabolic path and (b) when it has descended to half that height? (c) As a percentage, how much faster is it moving in part (b) than in part (a)?

- A person throws a ball horizontally from the top of a building that is 24.0m above the ground level. The ball lands 100m down range from the base of the building. What was the initial speed of the ball? Neglect air resistance and use g = 9.8m / s * 2arrow_forwardIn 2007, Michael Carter (U.S.) set a world record in the shot put with a throw of 24.77 m. What was the initial speed of the shot if he released it at a height of 2.10 m and threw it at an angle of 38.0° above the horizontal? (Although the maximum distance for a projectile on level ground is achieved at 45° when air resistance is neglected, the actual angle to achieve maximum range is smaller; thus, 38° will give a longer range than 45° in the shot put.)arrow_forwardIf the stone had been thrown front the cliff too with the same initial speed and the same angle, but above the horizontal, would it’s impact velocity be different?arrow_forward
- Bart Jumps Springfield Gorge on his skateboard. Springfield Gorge us 50m wide, and Bart has constructed a 1.0 m Hugh ramp inclined at 30° to the horizontal. Air resistance is neglected. Homer had calculated that he can jump the gorge if the ramp is inclined to 45°, and he attains a speed of 20m/s. Will Homer make it? The archer aims the arrow directly ahead, that is to say, parallel with the ground. Bows are drawn to the corner of the mouth when fired. Let's say, for this particular archer, that puts the arrow 1.8 m (about 5.5 feet) above the ground. Assume that we have measured the initial speed of arrows fired by this archer with this bow and it is 100 m/s. (Ignore wind resistance) a) At what point during the arrow's flight will it be moving the fastest? (Be careful here, think about it. If it jumps with the same initial speed at an angle of 45.0 degrees, what would the range be?arrow_forwardA skilled skier knows to jump upward before reaching a downward slope. Consider a jump in which the launch speed is Vo = 14.5 m/s, the launch angle is 0o = 9.9°, the initial course is approximately flat, and the steeper track has a slope of 12.2°. Figure (a) shows a prejump that allows the skier to land on the top portion of the steeper track. Figure (b) shows a jump at the edge of the steeper track. In Figure (a), the skier lands at approximately the launch level. (a) In the landing, what is the angle between the skier's path and the slope?
