Concept explainers
As a single crystal is rotated in an x-ray spectrometer (Fig. 3.22a), many parallel planes of atoms besides AA and BB produce strong diffracted beams. Two such planes are shown in Figure P3.38. (a) Determine geometrically the interplanar spacings d1 and d2 in terms of d0. (b) Find the angles (with respect to the surface plane AA) of the n = 1, 2, and 3 intensity maxima from planes with spacing d1. Let λ = 0.626 Å and d0 = 4.00 Å. Note that a given crystal structure (for example, cubic) has interplanar spacings with characteristic ratios, which produce characteristic diffraction patterns. In this way, measurement of the angular position of diffracted x-rays may be used to infer the crystal structure.

- Do it now.arrow_forwardI currently have 9.00 x sin(61) = 7.87 for the +y value of quadrant 2. Then 6.20 x sin(53.2) = 4.96 as the -y value of quadrant 3. Would I use cos to find x axis? When I do this they are obviously two different values. I'm a little lost as my teacher is confusing. Please do step by step so I can easily break it down for understanding.arrow_forwardEx. 2. If H = m q² + V(g), then show that i ħq = qH - Hq %3D is satisfied if dq IP - pq = iħ where q = %3D dt [Here V(q) is potential function].arrow_forward
- Electrons are ejected from a metallic surface with speeds ranging up to 4.1 × 105 m/s when light with a wavelength of 630nm is used. What is the cutoff frequency for this surface? Express your answer in terms of 1014 Hz and round it to the nearest hundredth. For example, if you get 1.234 x 1014 Hz, you type in 1.23. (Hint: you should first calculate the work function of the surface.) Use h=6.626x1034 Js; c=3 x108 m/s. ; me=9.11x10-31kg Js; c=3 x108 m/s. ; me=9.11x1031kgarrow_forwardHelp me solve the following table. Angle of incidence (?i) is 65, angle uncertainty (??) is 1. I tried (1*2.4919*pi)/180 * ((1/tan65)+(1/tan22)) = ?n, but it said the answer was wrong, and i don't know how to continue from there. So, the answer cannot be 4.8838.arrow_forwardSuperimpose on a single plot EN, ER, and EA versus r up to 1.0 nm.arrow_forward
