Chapter 3, Problem 3.44P, The force-couple system consists of the force R=250i+360j400kN and the couple-vector

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The equivalent wrench and the coordinates of the point where it crosses the x-y plane.

Answer to Problem 3.44P

The equivalent wrench consists of:

Force R=(250i+360j400k) N

Couple CR=(245.7i+353.8j393.1k) N.m

And axis of the wrench passes through the point (0.991, -2.31, 0) m.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

Force couple system with:

  R=(250i+360j400k) NCR=(1200i+750j+560k) Nm

Calculations:

Unit vector in the direction of R:

  λ=R|R| λ=( 250 i +360 j 400 k 250 2 + 360 2 + ( 400 ) 2 )λ=(0.4213i+0.6067j0.6741k)

Component of CR in the direction of λ is:

  CtR=CRλ=1200(0.4213)+750(0.6067)+560(0.6741)CtR=583.1 Nm

Expressing in vector form:

  CtR=CtRλ=583.1(0.4213i+0.6067j0.6741k)CtR=(245.7i+353.8j393.1k) Nm

Hence, the equivalent wrench will consists of:

Force R=(250i+360j400k) N, and

Couple CR=(245.7i+353.8j393.1k) N.m

Now let the wrench intersects the x-y plane at A (x, y, 0).

  rOA×R=CnR

Where, CnR - Component of CR that is normal to λ :

  CnR=CRCtRCnR=(1200i+750j+560k)(245.7i+353.8j393.1k)CnR=(954.3i+396.2j+953.1k) Nm

And, rOA=xi+yj

Substituting,

  ( i j k x y 0 250 360 400 )=954.3i+396.2j+953.1kor,400(y)i+400(x)j+(360x250y)k=954.3i+396.2j+953.1k

Equating i, j and k components:

  400(y)=954.3    y=2.39 m400(x)=396.2      x=0.991 m

Conclusion:

The equivalent wrench consists of force R=(250i+360j400k) N and couple CR=(245.7i+353.8j393.1k) N.m

And this wrench intersects the x-y plane at the point (0.991, -2.31, 0) m.

A container filled with 70 kg of liquid water at 95°C is placed in a 90-m3 room that is initially at 12°C. A strain gauge rosette that is attached to the surface of a stressed component gives 3 readings (ɛa = A, b = B, &c = C). If the strain gauge rosette is of the D° type (indicating the angle between each of the gauges), construct a Mohr's Strain Circle overleaf. You should assume that gauge A is aligned along the x-axis. Using the Mohr's Strain Circle calculate the: (i) principal strains (ε1, 2)? (ii) principal angles (1, 2)? You should measure these anticlockwise from the y-axis. (iii) maximum shear strain in the plane (ymax)?
