The general functions of plasma membrane.
Concept introduction:
The plasma membrane is a lipid layer present along the boundary of the cell. It protects the various components and the organelles present inside the cell like nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and the golgi apparatus. The membrane has several protein receptors, which help in cell signaling mechanisms. The enzymes present in the cell maintain the metabolic functions of the cell by catalyzing the reactions and decreasing the activation energy.
Explanation of Solution
The basic functions of the cell membranes include:
- The formation of a boundary separating the organelle inside the cell.
- The presence of the receptors on the cell for helping in the activation of the cell signaling mechanisms.
- The presence of the enzymes inside the cell, which activate the enzyme catalysis of the metabolic reactions.
- The presence of the optimum temperature and pH for the effective catalysis of the enzymatic reactions.
- The transport of the metabolic substrates like glucose and ions including the sodium and potassium through the ion gated channels for the transmission of impulse.
