It protects the various components and the organelles present inside the cell like nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and the golgi apparatus. The membrane has several protein receptors, which help in cell signaling mechanisms. The enzymes present in the cell maintain the metabolic functions of the cell by catalyzing the reactions and decreasing the activation energy.

• The formation of a boundary separating the organelle inside the cell.
• The presence of the receptors on the cell for helping in the activation of the cell signaling mechanisms.
