Introduction:

The term in Greek, eu means “well" or "true" and karyon is "kernel"; hence, a eukaryotic cell refers to a cell with a true nucleus along with other membrane-bound organelles such as plastids and Golgi. Protozoa, fungi, plants, and animals are all eukaryotic cells. These eukaryotic cells contain DNA or the genetic material packaged in the form of thread-like structures or chromosomes. Different organisms contain different numbers of chromosomes: for example, humans have 46 chromosomes in a cell. The term ploidy refers to the number of sets of chromosomes in the nucleus of a cell.
