Introduction:
Operon can be defined as a set of adjacent structural genes with adjacent regulatory signals that affect transcription of structural genes. Each operon consists of structural genes, promoter, regulator, and operator.
An operator is a DNA segment that turns the gene on and off. Its interaction with proteins increases or decreases the rate of transcription from occurring and thus, makes an operon inducible or repressible. Promoter is a segment of DNA where RNA polymerase binds to begin the transcription process. Lac operon is an inducible operon in which structural genes Z, Y, and A are induced in the presence of lactose
