The functional group that interconverts estradiol and estrone has to be identified. The class of chemical reactions that interconverts estradiol and estrone has to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

  • Functional group: They are certain substitutes in the organic molecules which are determine the characteristic reactions taking place in it.
  • Alcohol: It is an organic compound where it contains at least one −OH group. It is represented as ROH.
  • Ketone: Ketone is a group of organic compound where two aryl or alkyl groups are connected by a carbonyl group. It is represented as RC(=O)R'.
  • Steroid: Steroids are a type of organic compound having a molecular structure with four rings connected to each other.  There are three types of steroids. They are mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids and sex hormones. There are mainly three female sex hormones namely estrone, estradiol and progesterone.
  • Oxidation: The oxidation is reaction that involves addition of oxygen atom or loss of electrons or removal of hydrogen atom present in the chemical compound.
