The magnetic field due to current in wires in your home can affect a compass. Discuss the problem in terms of currents, depending on whether they are ac or dc, and their distance away.
The effect of magnetic field due to current in wires in home which affect a compass in terms of currents and their distance away.
Answer to Problem 1Q
Ac has only little effect on the compass needle whereas dc currents will deflect compass needle.
Explanation of Solution
For ac currents the direction of the current and the magnetic field will change quickly. This quick change will have a small effect on the compass needle. For the direct currents, the magnitude and the direction of the compass will effect the deflection of the compass. By increasing the distance from the wire the effect on the compass will decrease.
