Chapter 27.6, Problem 20CC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Which type of polyethylene is used to make Ziploc bags and folding tables.

Concept introduction:

When ethylene undergoes polymerization polyethylene is formed.  In absence of Ziegler-Natta catalyst ethylene polymerizes to give polyethylene that has about 20 branches per thousand carbon atoms.  This has relatively low density giving rise to low-density polyethylene (LDPE).  In presence of Ziegler-Natta catalyst ethylene polymerizes to give polyethylene that has about five branches per thousand carbon atoms.  This has relatively high density giving rise to high-density polyethylene (HDPE).  The density difference makes the polyethylene useful for making many materials.

To identify: To identify which polyethylene will be used to make Ziploc bags and folding tables.
