Quark Model of the Neutron. The neutron is a particle with zero charge. Nonetheless, it has a nonzero magnetic moment with z-component 9.66 × 10−27A • m2. This can be explained by the internal structure of the neutron. A substantial body of evidence indicates that a neutron is composed of three fundamental particles called quarks: an "up" (u) quark, of charge +2e/3, and two "down” (d) quarks, each of charge -e/3. The combination of the three quarks produces a net charge of

- A water molecule is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, with a total of 10 electrons and 10 protons. The molecule is modeled as a dipole with an effective separation d = 3.9 1012 m between its positive and negative charges. What is the magnitude of the water molecules dipole moment?arrow_forwardTwo d = 4.40-m nonconducting wires meet at a right angle. One segment carries +2.90 μC of charge distributed uniformly along its length, and the other carries -2.9 µC distributed uniformly along it, as shown in the following figure. K d d ++++ P (a) Find the magnitude and direction of the electric field these wires produce at point P, which is 220.0 cm from each wire. (Assume the +x axis goes to the right.) magnitude direction N/C 。 counterclockwise from the +x direction (b) If an electron is released at P, what are the magnitude and direction of the net force that these wires exert on it? magnitude N direction ° counterclockwise from the +x directionarrow_forwardAn electron moving with a speed Vo enters a region where an E field points in the same direction as the electron's velocity (towards +x-axis). Determine the velocity of the electron as function of time. Express your answer in terms of the variables Vo, |e|, E, m and t Vx=arrow_forward
- Alpha particles which have a charge +2e and mass 6.64 x 10-27 kg are initially at rest and are fired directly at a stationary platinum nucleus (charge +78e) at a speed of 1.30 x 107 m/s. Determine the distance of closest approach (in fm) before the alpha particle reverses direction. Assume the platinum nucleus remains stationary. Assume the alpha particles are initially very far from a stationary platinum nucleus. fmarrow_forwardQUESTION 11 Redo Example 18.1 (p. 773, "How strong is the Coulomb force relative to the gravitational force?") for two electrons situated 53 pm apart. Express your answer asnx 1042 and type in just the value of n with two significant figures.arrow_forwardComposite or stratovolcanoes often eject tiny particles of dust into the atmosphere causing dust clouds during eruptions. When particles of opposite charge collide, they form a dust aggregate. Two dust particles have a +8.4 µC and −8.4 µCcharge, respectively. The particles are 7 cm apart. What is the magnitude of the Coulomb force between them?arrow_forward
- Calculate the magnitude and direction of the Coulomb force on each of the three charges shown in Figure P15.10.arrow_forwardConsider two identical charges, of charge 3.65 mC, moving at the same speed of v = 34 × 105 m/s. The charges are moving in parallel lines (along the y-direction, sov=vjfor both), but are offset from each other as seen in the diagram. One charge is a distance 10.1 cm from the origin along the x-axis, and the other is a distance 10.1 cm along the y-axis. A) What is the total magnetic field at the origin, being produced by both charges, in teslas? B) What is the total magnetic field at point P, being produced by both charges, in teslas? Point P has coordinates (x,y)=(10.1,10.1) cm.arrow_forwardDuring surgery, anesthesiolgists uses a mass spectrometer to monitor the respiratory gases of a patient. A gas often monitored is Isoflurane (molar mass = 3.06 ×10-25 kg). A singly ionized molecules of isoflurane has a charge if +e and moves at a speed of 7.5×103 m/s. If the path in which it travels is considered circular with a radius of 0.10 m then: Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic field that the spectrometer uses. If, and in a hypothetical case, a secondary reaction occurs creating a second particle which is negatively charged, twice the mass of the isoflurane and travels at 1.8 ×103 m/s. What is the radius of its circular path? Draw how the paths of these two molecules are affected under the influence of the magnetic force.arrow_forward
- Flow cytometry, illustrated as shown, is a technique used to sort cells by type. The cells are placed in a conducting saline solution which is then forced from a nozzle. The stream breaks up into small droplets, each containing one cell. A metal collar surrounds the stream right at the point where the droplets separate from the stream. Charging the collar polarizes the conducting liquid, causing the droplets to become charged as they break off from the stream. A laser beam probes the solution just upstreamfrom the charging collar, looking for the presence of certain types of cells. All droplets containing one particular type of cell are given the same charge by the charging collar. Droplets with other desired types of cells receive a different charge, and droplets with no desired cell receive no charge. The charged droplets then pass between two parallel charged electrodes where they receive a horizontal force that directs them into different collection tubes, depending on their…arrow_forward+Q + a a (a) What is the dipole moment of the configuration shown above?
