Three geologic features that are explained by plate tectonics.

Answer to Problem 20RQ
Mountain building, earthquakes and the formation of rocks are the three geologic features that are explained by plate tectonics.
Explanation of Solution
Mountain building is mainly due to the continent-continental plate convergence. When two continental plates converge, subduction is not possible because of similar densities of two continental plates therefore, a part of the plate breaks and folds up on each other. It finally becomes mountain chain. Himalayas, the longest mountain chain was formed in similar manner.
Earthquakes are a result of interaction between two plates. When two plates collide or slides each other, huge energy is released causing earthquakes. It is evident by the fact that most earthquakes prone zones are located at near the plate boundaries.
The formation of the rocks can be explained by the plate tectonics. The heat can be generated by collision between the plates. Due to that process the pre-existing rocks become the metamorphic rocks.
Conclusion:
Therefore, mountain building, earthquakes and the formation of rocks are the three geologic features that are explained by plate tectonics.
