Summary Introduction

Concept introduction: Lateral meristems are cylindrical layers of the meristem that run lengthwise through shoots and roots. The lateral meristems include the vascular cambium and cork cambium. Vascular cambium is the lateral meristem that produces the secondary xylem and phloem. Cork cambium is the lateral meristem that forms the cork which protects, insulates, and waterproofs the stem or root surface.
