The monk and the mountain A monk set out from a monastery in the valley at dawn. He walked all day up a winding path, stopping for lunch and taking a nap along the way. At dusk, he arrived at a temple on the mountaintop. The next day the monk made the return walk to the valley, leaving the temple at dawn, walking the same path for the entire day, and arriving at the monastery in the evening. Must there be one point along the path that the monk occupied at the same time of day on both the ascent and descent? (Hint: The question can be answered without the Intermediate Value Theorem.) Obviously, nobody that's already in the bathroon gets kicked out, but someone arriving after the sign is up will have to go find another batbroom even if the cleaning hasn't started yet. This algorithm is a solution to a resource access-synchronisation problem: specifically, the controlled resource is the bathroom, and the problem and solution are related to the readers-writers problem. Pseudocode:We can describe this algorithm using two semaphores: a binary semaphore called "mutex" and a counting semaphore called "empty"-When the custodial staff enters the bathroom, they acquire the mutex semaphore to ensure that they have exclusive access…arrow_forwardINTRODUCTION: In chemistry, neutralization occurs when an acid and a base react with each other. Most chemistry occurs in water (that is, is aqueous); under these circumstances, neutralization leads to water with no excess hydrogen or hydroxide ions present. Neutralization can most simply be expressed as acid + base → salt + water For example, HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O The stoichiometry of the reaction depends on how much hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion each reactant provides. In this case, each molecule of HCl provides one hydrogen ion, and each molecule of NaOH provides one hydroxide ion. The one hydrogen and one hydroxide ion combine to form one molecule of water. For this assignment, suppose that you have been presented with several solutions of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and some of the most popular bases for wastewater treatment: magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), calcium oxide (CaO), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and ammonia…arrow_forward

Nobody really wants to be the one to take the news; the way goes through enemy territory and, even if the messenger gets through, the classic fate of the bearer of bad news may be waiting. (Let's just say, this is how the phrase "Don't shoot the messenger" became relevant.) To determine which messenger will be sent, X sits all of his messengers down in a circle, selects a number, and starts to count off. Messengers are allowed to leave the circle one by one, and the last messenger left is the one who will deliver the bad news. The counting off procedure is slightly unusual, however, because it is actually the messenger after the last one counted who gets to leave the circle. Consider the following example with 5 messengers, in which the number selected for counting off is 7. We'll start at the "head" of the list and move forward. Since it is circular, the "head"…arrow_forwardFortune 500 Company: Walt Disney A. About the Organization: The first step is to describe the organization at which the IT problem(s) exist / could exist. Preferably, this should be an organization that you have previously worked at, or are currently working at. Otherwise, you can search for non-trivial IT-related problem(s) that major (i.e., Fortune 500) corporations have faced, and take that on as the problem(s) you are going to address in your case study writeup. In addition to a general description of the business, analyze the organization using (a) Porter’s Five Forces model, and (b) the Value Chain model (i.e., how does the organization create value) B. Problem Identification and Analysis The next step is to identify the specific IT-related problem(s) at the organization. You must clearly describe the problem(s) in detail, covering both their technical as well as social aspects. Identify the stakeholders involved, and how the problem impacted / could impact each stakeholder.…arrow_forward

You are not told how many teams are participating but you do know that: Each team has a name, which is one of the uppercase letters A-Z. No two teams have the same name, so there are a maximum number of 26 teams. Each team has the same number of members. No two runners cross the finish line at the same time – i.e. there are no ties. At the end of the race we can write the results as a string of characters indicating the order in which runners crossed the finish line. For example: ZZAZAA We can see there were two teams: A and Z. Team A’s runners finished in 3rd, 5th and 6th place. Team Z’s runners finished in 1st, 2nd and 4th place. Scoring the race Each runner is assigned a score equal to their finishing place. In the example above team Z’s runners achieved scores of 1, 2 and 4. Team A’s runners scores were 3, 5, and 6 respectively. The team’s score is the sum of the members score divided by the number of people on…arrow_forwardComputational Theory: The halting problem is described as the impossibility to know if a program (based on any programming language) will halt or not after it starts running. Lately, I’ve felt a little overwhelmed with my schedule, so I thought this exercise might help me find a sense of peace and focus. Before the exercise, I felt a bit scattered, with my mind racing between tasks and concerns. My thoughts were cluttered, and I was finding it hard to focus on the present moment. During the exercise, I was guided to imagine a place where I felt completely at ease. I envisioned a calm, quiet garden filled with sunlight and vibrant flowers, much like the peaceful image of the butterfly on a flower. This mental imagery helped me relax, and I found myself breathing more deeply, feeling grounded in the moment. After the exercise, I felt noticeably calmer and more centered. My mind was clearer, and I had a…arrow_forward
