Introduction:

Biodegradable materials are those materials which can easily be decomposed by the action of microorganisms. Microorganisms degrade the materials and are beneficial for the environment. Biodegradable plastics have the ability to replace petroleum-based plastics which are non-biodegradable. Some bacteria produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). It is a polymer having carbon-based storage molecule which is similar to plastics based on petroleum.

Microbial metabolites are produced after a metabolism reaction by microorganisms. Primary metabolites are produced during active metabolism as a by-product while secondary metabolites are produced after the culture has moved to stationary phase.
