Chapter 26, Problem 26.20QP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Why iron is only about two-thirds as abundant as aluminium in earth’s crust and mass it costs only about one quarter as much to produce has to be explained.

Concept introduction:

The abundance of many minerals in the earth’s crust or silicates are oxygen, silicon, aluminium, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and others. In our problem the abundance or iron is about two thirds as abundance as aluminium in earth’s crust. However, the cost is depends on what type of separation process used. We have three common methods to separate ores, they are distillation, electrolysis, and zone refining. For purification of iron can be achieved by using blast furnace but aluminium is produced by electrolysis.

A certain half-reaction has a standard reduction potential Ered +1.26 V. An engineer proposes using this half-reaction at the anode of a galvanic cell that must provide at least 1.10 V of electrical power. The cell will operate under standard conditions. Note for advanced students: assume the engineer requires this half-reaction to happen at the anode of the cell. Is there a minimum standard reduction potential that the half-reaction used at the cathode of this cell can have? If so, check the "yes" box and calculate the minimum. Round your answer to 2 decimal places. If there is no lower limit, check the "no" box.. Is there a maximum standard reduction potential that the half-reaction used at the cathode of this cell can have? If so, check the "yes" box and calculate the maximum.
