Chapter 26, Problem 1RC
Summary Introduction
To describe: The structures and morphology of virion.
Introduction: Virion is referred to as a complete virus particle. The structure of virion can be studied by using electron microscopy, biochemical analysis, immunology, and X-ray diffraction.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
Virions are mainly composed of nucleocapsid containing deoxyribonucleic acid or ribonucleic acid and a protein coat, which is known as capsid. Some virions also contain a lipid envelope, and such virions are referred to as enveloped viruses. The types of capsid that can be observed in virions are helical capsids that are hollow tubes shaped containing protein walls and icosahedral capsids that has a regular polyhedron containing 20 triangular faces and 12 vertices.
