A catabolic pathway is a part of the metabolic process. In the catabolic pathway, the breakdown of large molecules results in the release of energy along with the formation of smaller molecules. The conversion of large molecules into smaller molecules takes place by a series of steps, during which food gets metabolized. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) acts as a carrier molecule for energy. Hence, it is the energy that is released during the catabolism of food.
