The large intestine or large colon is named so because of its large diameter and not because of its length. It receives about 500 mL of residues daily that are not digested. The large intestine consists of about four major parts, namely the colon, cecum, rectum, and anal canal. Water absorption takes place in the intestine; waste residues are stored here and are removed during defecation.
