Chapter 2.5, Problem 5CC
Summary Introduction
To determine:
How many molecules of ghrelin are present in 1L of blood if concentration of appetite regulating hormone ghrelin is present about 1.3 x 10-10 in a blood of a fasting person?
Introduction:
Appetite regulating hormone is also known as hunger hormone. Hunger hormone is of two types: leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is a hormone made up of fat cells that help to reduce the appetite and are responsible for weight loss while ghrelin raises the appetite and also involve in gain of body weight. Ghrelin is made up of 28 amino acids produced in stomach.

- A 70-kg adult human (154 lb) could meet his orher entire energy needs for one day by eating 3 moles ofglucose (540 g). (We do not recommend this.) Each mol-ecule of glucose generates 30 molecules of ATP when it isoxidized to CO2. The concentration of ATP is maintained incells at about 2 mM, and a 70-kg adult has about 25 litersof intracellular fluid. O T1 is most likely a cell that expresses a high affinity transporter for glucose. T2 is most likely a cell that expresses a high affinity transporter for glucose. T1 must be a cell expressing the insulin-dependent glucose transporter. Each transporter has a similar Vmax and therefore both T1 and T2 are the same cell type.arrow_forward
