Chapter 25, Problem 4TYU
Summary Introduction

Introduction: The evolution of many species from a single ancestor is termed as adaptive radiation. It is a continuous process, where the diversification of species is in a common ancestral line. Species from a single ancestor can get fragmented into different subpopulations when isolated geographically and exposed to different environmental conditions. The species in a new habitat could establish their role in a new environment and become different from the common ancestor.

Perhaps 98 percent to 99 percent of all species that have ever existed areextinct. Nearly all went extinct long before humans arrived on the scene. Whyshould we be concerned about the extinction of organisms today?
Which of the following is likely a reason why evolutionary radiation would occur on islands? A) there are many more species on islands B) islands tend to have more favourable habitats than continents because they are moderated by the ocean C) islands may have fewer animal and plant groups and thus provide more ecological opportunities D) organisms can disperse easily across oceans E) islands often have more diverse habitats than continents
Ernst Mayr defined a biological species as a population whosemembers can exchange genetic material during reproduction (seechapter 14). How does horizontal gene transfer complicate thisdefinition of species?
