Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structural formulas for the $\alpha \text{ and }\beta \text{-methyl pyranosides}$ formed by reaction of $\text{D-galactose}$ with methanol in presence of hydrogen chloride are to be written.

Concept introduction:

Glycosides are the carbohydrate derivatives in which the anomeric hydroxyl group is replaced by some other substituent. Glycosides are termed as $\text{O-glycosides}$ only when the atom attached to the anomeric carbon is oxygen.

Glycosides are prepared by reaction of carbohydrate with alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. This is called Fischer Glycosidation reaction.
