Lungs are considered as the main organs belonging to the respiratory system in the human and other animals. It is situated near the backbone and either side of the heart. The prime function of the lungs include the extraction of the oxygen coming from the atmosphere and mix it into the bloodstream, and exhale carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere. This is the process of gas exchange.
