Nitrogen fixation is the process by which the molecular nitrogen of the atmosphere is converted into ammonia or other nitrogenous compounds. Atmospheric nitrogen is unreactive and metabolically useless, so to make it useful, microorganisms convert it into useful nitrogenous compounds.
