Serine racemase is an enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of L-serine and D-serine. Therefore, this enzyme has only one substrate and one product. D-serine is a neurotransmitter that activates the NMDA receptors present in the brain. Serine racemase enzyme is coded by SRR gene. Moreover, this enzyme is PLP dependent enzyme, that catalyzes the racemization reaction and dehydration reaction.
