Introduction:
The inflow of sodium (Na+) ions in the plasma membrane through the membrane channel regulates the depolarization of nervous and muscular system and their functions. It is the main cation present in the extracellular fluid (ECF) and is associated with regulation of blood plasma osmolarity. Increased concentration of sodium raises the osmolarity of the blood. Also, it determines the level as well as distribution of total body water among several fluid compartments. Gradients of Na+ ions across the cell generate potential energy helps to transport other solutes. Also, it regulates body heat and pH of the ECF. Aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone, and natriuretic peptides regulate the concentration of Na+ in the body.

- Licorice is used as a remedy in Chinese traditional medicine and also is a flavoring for candy. When licorice is eaten, one of its components triggers the formation of a compound that mimics aldosterone and binds to receptors for it. Based on this information, explain why people who have high blood pressure are advised to avoid eating much licorice.arrow_forwarddescribe the effects of ADH and aldosterone on body waterarrow_forwardAtrial natriuretic peptide lowers blood pressure by increasing sodium reabsorption decreasing sodium reabsorption increasing sodium secretionarrow_forward
- Morgan is a nurse at the local hospital. She received the lab results back from a patient that said the patient has hyperaldosteronism, a high level of aldosterone. Based on this diagnosis, explain what you would expect in regard to blood levels of Na+ and K+ as well as blood pressure. Explain why.arrow_forwardDefine aldosteronearrow_forwardA patient has a tumor in the adrenal cortex that continuously secretes large amounts of aldosterone. What is this condition called, and what effects does this have on the total amount of sodium and potassium in her body?arrow_forward
- Describe the changes that occur in response to binding of aldosterone by kidney cells.arrow_forwardWhat is the primary action of aldosterone? Increase sodium excretion to reduce blood pressure Increase potassium excretion to reduce blood pressure Stimulate the release of ANP to reduce blood pressure Increase sodium reabsorption to increase blood pressurearrow_forwardANP acts as a _____and an antagonist to aldosterone, resulting in a _____in blood volume.arrow_forward
- Explain how the mineralocorticoid and Aldosterone regulates sodium and potassium homeostasis.arrow_forwardName the target tissue of aldosterone, and list theeffects of an increase in aldosterone secretion on theconcentration of ions in the blood.arrow_forwardExplain the functions of ADH, ANH, and aldosterone inhomeostasis.arrow_forward
