To determine: The major theme that is evident among the relationship of structure to function, information flow, pathways that transform energy and matter, interactions within biological system, or evolution and how it is related to the statement “Nearly all animals have innate immunity, but only some have adaptive immunity. This suggests that innate immunity appeared first among animal lineage with adaptive immunity appearing later”.
Introduction: Immunity is the process of defense performed by an individual’s body in response to a foreign agent that invades the body. There are two kinds of immunity namely innate immunity and adaptive immunity. Innate immunity is a kind of immunity that is seen in individuals from birth. All animals possess innate immunity that is their first line of defense against any antigen.
Another type of immunity is called adaptive immunity that is seen only among vertebrates. This immunity is developed by an individual’s own immune system by encountering and learning the defense mechanism against antigens. It is believed that innate immunity was evolved first, and later on adaptive immunity was evolved only in vertebrates not in all animals.
