Chapter 23, Problem 25P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The mechanism thataccounts for each step of the given synthesis is to be written.

Concept introduction:

Cyperone derives its name from the Cyperusrotundus, a nut grass found in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. It can exist in both αand β forms. It is majorly used in the medication of androgen-, estrogen-, and progestin-related hormonal diseases. Its molecular formula is C15H22O. Chemically, it is a terpene.

Robinson annulation process is an effective process for the ring formation of six-membered polycyclic compounds, such as lipids and steroids. It works with three important steps, which are as follows: conjugate addition of resonance-stabilized carbanion, aldol condensation, and elimination of hydroxyl ion (OH).

Aldol condensation involves the addition of the aldol (aldehyde and alcohol) group, followed by condensation of the product. In this reaction, the enolate of an aldehyde or a ketone reacts at the αcarbon with the carbonyl part of the other molecule to produce an βhydroxy aldehyde or a ketone.

Michael addition is a reaction that involves the conjugate addition of a resonance-stabilized carbanion for the formation of an enolate.

The reaction thatinvolves the removal of an αproton through a base is known as E1 elimination reaction.

The reaction thatinvolves the removal of the OH group through dehydration is known as E2 elimination reaction.

A certain half-reaction has a standard reduction potential Ered +1.26 V. An engineer proposes using this half-reaction at the anode of a galvanic cell that must provide at least 1.10 V of electrical power. The cell will operate under standard conditions. Note for advanced students: assume the engineer requires this half-reaction to happen at the anode of the cell. Is there a minimum standard reduction potential that the half-reaction used at the cathode of this cell can have? If so, check the "yes" box and calculate the minimum. Round your answer to 2 decimal places. If there is no lower limit, check the "no" box.. Is there a maximum standard reduction potential that the half-reaction used at the cathode of this cell can have? If so, check the "yes" box and calculate the maximum.
