Question
Chapter 23, Problem 23.57SP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
A set of rules is used to write the IUPAC name of the compounds.
Concept introduction:
The rules to write the IUPAC names are as follows-
- First, longest carbon chain should be identified. This chain is called the parent chain.
- Recognize all of the substituents (groups appending from the parent chain).
- Count the number of the carbons of the parent chain from the end so that the substituents get the lowest number.
- The substituent which occurs more than one time then the position of each point on which the substituent present is written with position number. The number of times the substituent group occurs is indicated by a prefix (di, tri, tetra, etc.).
- If there are two or more different substituents they are written in alphabetical order .
- The parent chain is taken which has
a) Greatest number of side chains is preferred.
b) With substituents having the lowest-numbers is preferred.
c) Greatest number of carbon atoms attached to the smaller side chain. - For a cyclic hydrocarbon the prefix “cyclo”- this is written in front of the base name.
