Chapter 23, Problem 23.50SP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

With the given molecular formula a compound can be deduced with the desired functional group.

Concept introduction:

Organic chemistry starts with simple hydrocarbons i.e. the alkanes. An alkane with same number of carbon can have different properties like ethanol shows different properties that the acetic acid although they have same number of carbons that is two. The difference in the properties is due to the presence of different functional group. A functional group is a specific group of atoms or bonds that is responsible for the characteristic chemical reactions of that compound. A particular functional group will show similar reactions.

Given:

The descriptions are given as-

  1. A ketone with the formula C5H10O
  2. An ester with the formula C6H12O2
  3. A compound with the formula C2H5NO2 that is both an amine and a carboxylic acid.

To determine:

To determine structures and condensed formulae for molecules that meet the given descriptions.
