Chapter 23, Problem 23.35QP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Main product formed when hydrogen bromide is added to Methylpropene has to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Alkenes undergo addition reaction with unsymmetrical reagent and symmetrical reagent.  The addition reaction takes place across the double bond.  The addition follows Markownikoff’s rule.  This rule states that the hydrogen atom present in the reagent adds to the carbon atom in the double bond which has more number of hydrogen atoms bonded to it.

To identify: The major product formed when hydrogen bromide adds to Methylpropene.

Molecules of the form AH2 can exist in two potential geometries: linear or bent. Construct molecular orbital diagrams for linear and bent CH2. Identify the relevant point group, include all of the appropriate symmetry labels and pictures, and fill in the electrons. Which geometry would you predict to be more stable, and why? (Please draw out the diagram and explain)
