Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

We have to determine among the given compounds which compounds show cis-trans isomerism and draw the line drawing of the corresponding isomers

Concept introduction:

Cis-Trans isomers are configurational isomers arising in alkenes due to restricted rotation around the double bond.

There are two requirements for cis-trans isomerism:

1. Rotation must be restricted in the molecule. 2. There must be two nonidentical groups on each doubly bonded carbon atom. ie, compounds must be of the type :

Here we check the orientation of like groups with respect to the other group on the same side.

If the similar groups are in the same orientation the compound is said to be in cis configuration.

If the similar groups are in the opposite orientation the compound is said to be in trans configuration.
