To determine: The regions of the adrenal cortex along with the hormones secreted by each region.
Introduction: The adrenal cortex is the outer part of the adrenal gland. The adrenal cortex produces essential hormones that are vital to life. It produces cortisol that helps the body to respond against different kinds of stresses.
Explanation of Solution
The adrenal cortex is divided into three zones, which are mentioned as follows:
- Zona glomerulosa:
It is the outer zone of the adrenal cortex. It secretes steroid hormone, aldosterone.
- Zona fasciculata:
It is the central zone of the adrenal cortex. It secretes glucocorticoids, which increases plasma glucose concentration.
- Zona reticularis:
It is the inner zone of the adrenal cortex. It secretes sex hormones and androgens, which are dominant in males.
Zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, and zona reticularis are three zones that secrete aldosterone, glucocorticoids, and androgens, respectively.
