Concept explainers
To determine: The different effects of vasopressin and oxytocin even when there is a structural similarity between them.
Introduction:
Vasopressin and oxytocin both are peptide hormone that are produced by anterior pituitary. Peptide hormones vary in size. These peptide hormones are formed on the surface of ribosome in the form of precursor protein, and then these proteins are packed into secretary vesicles.
Explanation of Solution
Explanation:
Control of endocrine and osmoregulation in mammals is carried out by two multifunctional hormones, oxytocin and vasopressin. Vasopressin is released by different centers of brain under undesired conditions. Oxytocin is related to the reproductive activity. This hormone plays important role in the ejaculation of milk for breast feeding. Maternal activities like uterine contraction; labor pain is regulated by oxytocin. Vasopressin will increase water reabsorption in the kidney which will increase the blood pressure by initiating the contraction of blood vessel.
Thus, both oxytocin and vasopressin are structurally close but they perform different functions because their target organs are different, so the effect of both the hormone is also different.
Conclusion:
Both oxytocin and vasopressin are similar in structure but their activity varies because both of them act on different target organs.
