The pleurae are serous membranes that form the lining of the lungs and the thoracic cavity. There are two types of pleurae, visceral pleura and the parietal pleura. The visceral pleura covers the lungs while the parietal pleura covers the inner surface of the thoracic cavity. There is a space between the two pleurae called the pleural cavity.
