Functionally, the respiratory tract can be divided into two portions, namely conducting portion and respiratory portion. The conducting portion does not play any role in gaseous exchange but performs functions such as filtration and humidification of air that enters the lungs. The respiratory portion is the actual portion of the respiratory tract where all the gaseous exchange takes place.
