Interpretation:

The pathway for mutagenesis that results from a mutM gene mutation should be explained.

Concept introduction:

Mutagenesis is defined as the process through which DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that contains genetic information of an organism gets altered. The alteration in the genetic information results in mutation. Mutation can be result of any of the following:

  1. Spontaneous occurrence in nature.
  2. Exposure to mutagens
  3. Using laboratory procedures
The damage of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by oxidation is considered as one of the reasons for mutation. The product of this oxidative damage is 8oxoguanine (8-oxoG) and this is prevented by the Base excision repair mechanism.
