Chapter 22, Problem 2A
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
A poliomyelitis is a very infectious viral disease caused by polio virus and transmitted through feco-oral route from one person to another person. There is no cure for polio but can be prevented by immunization against polio virus. There are two types of Polio vaccines.
- 1. Oral polio vaccine (OPV)
- 2. Injectable polio vaccine (IPV)
Oral polio vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine produced by passing poliovirus into nonhuman cells at sublevel temperature which causes mutations in viral genome spontaneously. It is otherwise called as sabin vaccine.
Injectable polio vaccine is a inactivated poliovirus vaccine which provides immunoglobulin G mediated immunity in blood stream. It is 90% effective against all types of polio virus.

- I chose this topic because it addresses a critical and timely concern in public health. Childhood vaccination rates and vaccine hesitancy have gained significant attention in recent years due to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases and the growing influence of misinformation and anti-vaccine movements. This issue is crucial as it affects not only individual children but also public health at large. Understanding the factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy and the impact on vaccination rates is essential for developing effective public health interventions and ensuring the well-being of children and communities. The relevance of childhood vaccination rates and vaccine hesitancy to public health is profound. Vaccinations are a cornerstone of public health, providing one of the most effective means to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
