Interpretation:

The maximum rate that can be achieved in competitive inhibition compared with noncompetitive inhibition is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Competitive inhibition takes place when a substance that is not the substrate of the enzyme under normal condition can also binds to the enzyme’s active site. This results in direct competition with the substrate for the active site. Noncompetitive inhibition takes place when an inhibitor binds to a site present on the enzyme that is distinct from the active site which causes an alteration in the shape of the active site, making it unavailable for the substrate.
