Concept Introduction:
The effector is a small molecule that binds to a protein and regulates its biological activity. They act as ligands that can increase or decrease the activity of enzymes, gene expression, or cell signaling. Effectors are proteins that alter biochemical processes in a cell. Effectors include muscles and glands that produce a specific response to a stimulus. The effector binds to the specific site known as allosteric site
Effectors that increase the activity of protein are called allosteric activators. On the other hand, effectors that decrease protein activity are called allosteric inhibitors.
