Concept Introduction:
In bond line formulas, labels for individual carbon atoms are omitted, and hydrogen atoms attached to carbon atoms are shown only when necessary.
A molecular formula is determined from a bond line formula by counting the number of carbon atoms in it. The general molecular formula for alkanes is
In a condensed formula, the bonds between atoms are omitted. Two methyl groups at either end are written. The total number of methylene carbon atoms between the two terminal methyl groups is written as a subscript in the parentheses.
