The characteristic feature of this group is the presence of a notochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, and a post anal tail. All these animals are protostomes, in which anus develops from first opening in the embryo at gastrulation. All have different body coverings, which provide protection to the body.
