Smallpox is an infectious disease caused by an orthopoxvirus or smallpox variola virus. The disease causing virus contains two variants such as Variola major and Variola minor. Variola major has more mortality percentage of 20% compared to the Variola minor variant with 1%.

The artificial vaccine was first developed for smallpox disease and it is the first disease eradicated from the human population.
