The cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria consists of two different layers: 2-7 nm thick peptidoglycan layer, which is covered by a 7-8 nm thick outer membrane. There is also some space between the plasma membrane and the outer membrane known as periplasmic space and periplasm is the substance which occupies periplasmic space.
