Chapter 20, Problem 20.22P
To determine

The combined factor for the line.

The geodetic azimuth.

The ground distance in meters.

The combined factor for the line is 0.999871805 .

The geodetic azimuth is 5°5157.69 .

The ground distance in meters is 565.0527m .

Given:

The SPCS83 state plane coordinates of points A and B are tabulated below.

    PointE(m)N(m)
    A170222
    B227.7499784.0939

Calculation:

Write the Equation for Elevation factor.

ElevationFactor=RR+H+N …… (I)

Here, R is average radius of earth, H is the average orthometric height of the area, and N is the geoid height.

Assume, the mean orthometric height as 243m and average geoid height as 31.273m .

Substitute 6371000m for R , 31.273m for N , and 243m for H in Equation (I).

ElevationFactor=6371000m6371000m+243m31.273m=6371000m6371211.727m=0.999966768

Calculate the combined factor using formulae.

Combinedfactor=Elevationfactor×Scalefactor…… (II)

Substitute 0.9999050344 for scale factor, and 0.999966768 for Elevation factor in Equation (II).

Combinedfactor=0.999966768×0.9999050344=0.999871805

Write the expression to calculate the grid distance.

AB=EBEA2+(NBNA)2 …… (III) Substitute 170 for EA , 227.7499 for EB , 222 for NA , and 784.0939 for NB in Equation (III).

AB= 227.7499m170m2+(784.0939m222m)2= 57.7499m2+ 562.0939m2=565.0527m

Write the Expression to calculate ground distance.

Griddistance=Grounddistance×combinedfactor…… (IV)

Substitute 565.0527m for Grid distance, and 0.999871805 for combined factor in Equation (IV).

565.0527m=Grounddistance×0.999871805Grounddistance=565.0527m0.999871805Grounddistance=565.7540m

Calculate the angle of grid line.

θAB=tan1NBNAEBEA…… (V)

Substitute 170 for EA , 227.7499 for EB , 222 for NA , and 784.0939 for NB in Equation (V).

θAB=tan1784.0939222227.7499170=tan1562.093957.7499=tan19.73324=84°82.31

The line AB is lies in first quadrant, origin at A. In this case, the azimuth of line can be calculated by subtracting the angle of line from 90° , that is,

α=90θAB

Substitute 84°82.31 for θAB .

α=9084°82.31=5°5157.69

Conclusion:

Thus, the combined factor for the line is 0.999871805 .

Thus, the geodetic azimuth is 5°5157.69 .

Thus, the ground distance in meters is 565.0527m .
