When an ester is treated with sodium methoxide, a different ester is produced. This is an example of a transesterification reaction, so called because one ester is converted into another. The mechanism for this transesterification is typical of reactions involving a nucleophile and a carboxylic acid derivative. It is called a nucleophilic addition-elimination mechanism, which describes the two steps that take place.
