Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason for the lack of documented cases of in-flight transmission of meningococci, even when it has a similar mode of transmission to that of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which can be transmitted among the passengers in a flight.

Introduction:

The Gram negative pathogen Neisseria causes diseases in humans due to the presence of a cell wall containing lipo-oligosaccharides which has Lipid A as a component that causes symptoms like headache, vomiting, and fever, after the bacteria attaches to the host cell and infects it. The strain Neisseria meningitidis can escape phagocytes due to the presence of a polysaccharide capsule and can quickly traverse the body. These bacteria commonly attack the lower respiratory system of children, more than adults, and so it can be passed on from one person to the other through the tiny exhaled droplets, spreading the disease meningitis. Therefore, people living for long hours closely in contact, suffer from a greater risk of contacting this fatal disease that cause which can cause death in mere six hours after the symptoms start to occur.
