Chapter 2, Problem 71IP

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The molecular formula for CL-20 and HMX has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Molecular formula shows that the actual number of atoms of each element that are present in a molecule of the compound.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The lone pair of electrons on nitrogen is whether delocalized or not has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

The unshared electrons of an atom that does not involve in bonding are called lone pair.

Steps to determine the lone of pair of electrons,

  • Appropriate valence electron has to be known.
  • The actual number of valence electrons exhibited by the atom has to be known.
  • Count the number of bonds and assign the number of lone pair.

A formal charge (FC) is the charge assigned to an atom in a molecule, irrespective of relative electronegativity by thinking that electrons in all chemical bonds are shared equally among atoms. The electrons can be tracked using formal charge.

1. Using a Model set Build a model for the following compound [CH2BrCI]. 2. Build another model of the mirror image of your first molecule. 3. Place the two models next to each other and take a picture which shows the differences between the two models. 4. Determine the absolute stereochemistry R or S for the two models. 5. Write or type a paragraph to Discuss the stereochemical relationship between the two models of CH2BrCl. You must provide an explanation for your conclusions also provide a description for the colors used to represent each atom in the model's images.
