The difference between the expansion of work against constant pressure and work of reversible expansion has to be explained along with their consequences.

Concept Introduction:

Reversible process:

A thermodynamic process is said to be reversible if the process can return back in such a way that both the system and surrounding can return back to their original states.

Irreversible process:

An irreversible process is the process where the system and surrounding both cannot come back to their original state if the process is reversed.

Expansion work:

Expansion work is the work done when a system expands against an opposing pressure.  When a gas expands, work is done on the surroundings and the work done is equal to the area under the pressure-volume curve.
